What this Yin class is

A gentle half-hour of Yin to release tension from the back and shoulders and gain a little flexibility along the way. We warm the spine with child’s pose and puppy, resting face-down in crocodile, then move through sphinx and seal to work the back before opening each shoulder with a broken wing. We finish with a supported fish over a block — a really lovely way to open the chest and get a deep stretch into the upper back — and a soft neck release to close.

Who this class is for

Anyone carrying tension in their upper back or shoulders, whether from long days at a desk or simply from life. It suits all levels: there’s a gentler and a deeper option in every pose, so you can keep it soft with sphinx or take it further into seal whenever you feel ready.

What you need

Your mat and one yoga block — mainly for the supported fish at the end. No block? A thick book, a firm cushion or a pillow does the job beautifully, and a second prop under your head is a nice extra. Every pose here has a gentler option and a deeper one, so take whichever serves you today.

Common questions

What props do I need for this class?

Just one yoga block, mainly for the supported fish at the end. If you don't have a block, a thick book, a firm cushion or a pillow works just as well — anything that props up your shoulders and gently opens your chest. A second block or a cushion under your head is nice too, but entirely optional.

Is this suitable if I'm not very flexible or new to Yin?

Yes — this is an all-levels class and Yin isn't about how far you go. Find your edge at about 60–80%, let the shape do the work, and take the gentler option whenever you need it. Katie guides an easier version of every pose, from sphinx up to seal and child's pose over a cushion.

What does this class actually cover?

We warm the spine and shoulders with child's pose and puppy, resting into crocodile, then work the back with sphinx and seal, open the shoulders with broken wing on each side, and finish with a supported fish over a block and a short neck release. A calm, restful stretch from start to finish.

A gentle reminder: Yin asks you to respect your limits, not override them. Come out of any pose that feels like pain rather than sensation, ease off if your hands tingle or a knee complains, and take your time coming out of the long holds — the body feels tender for a moment, and that passes. This practice is about taking good care of your body, never pushing it.
